Practice Nurses and Nurse Associates


Our Practice Nurses are here to provide care for a range of health needs. This includes long-term conditions such as Asthma, COPD and Diabetes. They also carry out procedures such as contraception checks or ear syringing.

Our routine nurse appointments are available at both our Tramways and Middlewood sites. They can booked up to 4 weeks in advance.

Depending on the consultation required, you may need a longer appointment. Please tell the receptionist what you need and they will be able to find a suitable time for you. Appointment lengths vary and an estimate provided below.

Asthma Reviews


Patients diagnosed with Asthma and on inhalers need at least one asthma review each year. This is to ensure they are working correctly and safe to continue. Without these checks, the GP may not be able to issue you further prescriptions. You should receive a reminder when you need to book your appointment. But, we encourage patients to be aware keep track of when their review is due. These reviews usually take around 15 minutes with a Practice Nurse.


Contraceptive Coil Checks


If you have a contraceptive coil fitted it is important to check the threats yourself every 4 weeks. If you are unable to locate the threads of your coil, please book a consultation with a Practice Nurse. We would tell you to use an extra method of contraception in the meantime.


Contraceptive Depo Injection


Patients who have the depo injection for contraception need have his at the Practice every 11 to 12 weeks. If you are overdue for your appointment, please make our Reception team aware. This is a 15 minute appointment with one of our Practice Nurses.


Contraceptive Pill Checks


Patients on the contraceptive pill will need a review at least once a year. At the start this may be more frequent or if you are swapping to a new pill. The review will be a 15 minute appointment with a Practice Nurse.


COPD Reviews


Patients diagnosed with COPD will be invited for an annual check each year and you should receive a reminder to book an appointment. This is a vital part of the management of this chronic disease. Without these checks, the GP may not be able to issue you further prescriptions, so we encourage patients to be aware when their review is due. These reviews usually take around 30 minutes..


Diabetic Reviews


Patients diagnosed with diabetes will be invited for an annual check each year and you should receive reminder to book an appointment. This check allows the nurse to help monitor your medication and carry out assessments of your condition. Without these checks, the GP may not be able to issue you further prescriptions, so we encourage patients to be aware when their review is due. You will first need an appointment for your bloods taking and your foot check with one of our Healthcare Assistants. This usually takes around 20 minutes. You should then book another follow-up appointment with one of the Practice Nurses to discuss your results. This can also be done as a telephone consultation..


Dressings


If you require dressing or wound check, please make a routine appointment with one of our Practice Nurses or our Nurse Associate. If you have previously been seen at the hospital, please bring your dressings and discharge letter along with you to the appointment..


Ear Syringing


Patients who are experiencing compacted ear wax can book routine consultation with a Practice Nurse to have this removed. It is important that patients ensure that they have softened the wax with oil drops for 7 days prior to the appointment. If the wax remains to hard then we may be unable to go ahead with the procedure. Patients must also make sure that the ear if clear of infection. If you are experiencing any discomfort or discharge from your ear then you may need to wait for this to resolve. If you have any concerns, please seek advice from your pharmacist or GP..


INR Checks


If you are on medication that thins your blood, such as Warfarin, you may be required to have regular blood tests to ensure you are being prescribed the right levels of medication. For this you may need to book an INR check with one of our nursing team, who will then also be able to advise you on the most appropriate medication schedule to manage you condition..

Travel Advice and Vaccinations


If you are planning to travel abroad, you may require additional vaccinations or boosters to protect you from certain diseases. Some of these may be available from the practice, whilst others may require you to visit a private travel clinic.
